PUBLIC consultation on the Limerick City Centre Transport Plan and the Proposed Public Realm Strategy will close at 5 pm next Monday, October 12.

The Limerick City Centre Transport Plan (LCCTP) seeks to improve the city’s current transport system. The draft outlines its vision to create “a thriving, greener and active Limerick City Centre with economic growth, sustainability and facilitation of emissions reduction as fundamental goals.”

The plan aims to promote cycling and walking as the main mode of transport. The council wishes to support investments in a better bus transport system to encourage residents to move away from private cars.

LCCTP also wishes to improve the city’s air quality, linking to the Proposed Public Realm Strategy.

The Proposed Public Realm Strategy sets out to complete a series of projects for streets and spaces in Limerick’s city centre that will aid in “creating a more attractive and vibrant experience for residents and visitors.”

The spaces are described to “be animated with events, markets, and social life, creating a sense of safety, belonging and pride.”

Both proposals aim to make Limerick a greener and more sustainable city.

Councillor Ursula Gavin highlighted the importance of this scheme.

“This is a long-term strategy which has the potential to make our city more accessible and attractive to reside, work in and visit.”

“Furthermore, it acknowledges that enhanced public spaces are crucial for vibrant city centres for recreation, retail and dwell time,” she explained.

The public are invited to look at these plans and give their opinion and concerns about them.

“While we strive for a strong and thriving city centre economy, we must balance it against the concerns of residents, local businesses, older people, and people with disabilities and all proposals are carefully assessed to ensure they work for everyone,” Cllr Gavin stressed.
