A 37-year-old man was shot in Limerick City last night and Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information, CCTV, or dash cam footage.

The incident occurred on Hyde Road Avenue in Ballinacurra Weston at approximately 8.20 pm.

The victim was shot in the leg and transferred to University Hospital Limerick in a private car. His injuries are understood to be non-life-threatening.

Thomas O’Neill is known to Gardaí and was one of five men convicted for his part in a gang rape that occurred in County Clare in January of 2004. Judge Paul Carney sentenced O’Neill to 10 years in prison as a youth, with the final 12 months suspended, describing him as the “ringleader” of the group.

This was the ninth shooting in Limerick City since the beginning of 2026; there was a recorded number of 17 shootings in Limerick in 2025.

A Gardaí spokesperson said “One male was injured during the incident and was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. His injuries are understood to be non-life threatening.”

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone who was in the area at the time and may have dash-cam, CCTV or other footage, to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214 340, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
