Limerick City and County Council have announced that they will be holding a “Leave a Light On” campaign this Christmas. The campaign, which will run from 17th November to 31st December, involves encouraging local businesses to keep their shopfronts lit until at least midnight. The council will be offering a grant of €250 to help subsidise costs for any participating businesses.

In a press release issued from Limerick City and Council Council on Wednesday, the council expressed enthusiasm for the campaign, branding it “an initiative aimed at enhancing the vibrancy, safety, and sense of community in Limerick’s urban areas during the darker winter months.”

The announcement is certainly welcome news for the city, in particular, for women who may feel unsafe walking around after dark. The council, who have been in works to make the city a more secure environment, echoed this sentiment.

“This initiative is part of Limerick’s broader commitment to supporting the night-time economy and fostering a safer, more inclusive city environment.”

As sustainability is a key concern of present-day Limerick, businesses are encouraged to use energy-efficient lighting for the duration of the campaign. Social media promotion by the participating businesses is also being incentivised by way of raising awareness of the project.

Participating businesses must be street-front in Limerick City Centre, and excludes the involvement of certain businesses, including residential properties or offices not accessible to the public. The deadline for registration to the scheme is the 10th of November.

Craig Power, the Nighttime Economy Adviser for the council, commented that:

“This initiative is a simple yet powerful way to support our local businesses, enhance public safety, and bring warmth to our city during the winter months. We hope to see Limerick lit up with community spirit.”

In addition to this, the council asks businesses who take part to offer special events and offers, with the view of improving the local economy this winter.

“The scheme is part of the Night-Time Economy pilot programme,  supported by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport. The initiative encourages late-night vibrancy, with local businesses offering special offers, pop-up events, and extended hours.”

As always, health and safety must be accounted for, with the council reminding participants of fire safety regulations, and the importance of making sure that lighting does not obstruct vision for drivers and pedestrians.
