OVER 160 schools are expected to close across Limerick tomorrow as public sector strike action gets underway.

More than 140 primary schools and a further 28 secondary schools are expected to be affected by the industrial action.

The widespread closures are causing significant concern for parents, many of whom are struggling to secure childcare arrangements for the day.

Speaking to Limerick Voice, Orla Cunningham, a secondary school teacher in Tipperary, explained:

“We would love for the government to hear our concerns and make the changes necessary to not have further industrial action. There are parents left stranded with kids unable to go to school and everything grinds to a halt.”

Workers’ unions at a number of third-level institutions, including UL Unite at the University of Limerick, will join Wednesday’s strike action. Nearly 700 picket slots have been filled by members, with pickets planned across the campus from 7am to 7pm. Staff have also been advised not to use university parking facilities during the strike.

UL Unite convener Fergal O’Brien said the response from members has been strong, with close to 700 picket slots now filled.

“The response to the industrial action call from UL UNITE trade union membership has been phenomenal.  Our membership stands at an all-time high of over 1,000 and our picketing roster is fully covered, even allowing for the many entrances to UL that are being picketed. Our members are united in their desire to see meaningful public sector pay talks that reflect the cost of living crisis. The sense of solidarity amongst public sector workers is palpable and that will be reflected in picket lines all over the country.”

Public sector workers say the strike is aimed at drawing attention to the cost-of-living crisis and securing progress on a public pay agreement.

Schools and other educational services across the country are set to close, with further strike action planned for next week Wednesday October 21st.
