Investigations are ongoing amid the seizure of €400,000 on Tuesday morning. The discovery, which was made by Gardaí during the search of a property in Rathkeale, is believed to be in connection with a large-scale money laundering operation.
A woman who was arrested as a suspect of involvement in the case has since been released.
The money, which was found in fragments of cash and scattered across several bank accounts, was found alongside a number of other goods at the property. Gardaí can now confirm that among the objects were designer bags, watches and what appears to be rhinoceros horns. The total value of these objects has not been confirmed yet, but the World Animal Foundation estimates that a single rhino horn can cost at least $60,000 on the black market (equivalent to around €51,000).
In a statement released today from an Garda Síochána, it was confirmed that the horns are subject to undergo examination by experts.
In addition to this, a file is set to be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
