In a statement to press on Wednesday October 29th, 2025, Limerick City East Councillor Elena Secas disclosed her resignation from the Labour Party. Councillor Secas shared that despite nearly 20 years of service to the Labour Party, “[she] had very little support from the party locally” since 2024. The Limerick City East Councillor had been re-elected for the 3rd time in a row in 2024.
Councillor Secas was previously one of three Labour party councillors elected to the council, alongside Councillors Pádraigh Reale and Joe Leddin. Councillor Secas thanked the “very few local party members who would have supported and helped [her] in the past.”
Councillor Secas has assured her constituents that she “will continue to serve on Limerick City and County Council as an independent councillor” whose priority “remains to represent [constituents] to the best of [her] abilities.” Secas stated that she “will continue to work really hard and to uphold the values [she has] always shared.”
