Cill’s Cuig: Sport to watch on TV this weekend

“The Hungarian fans are as sick as parrots!” – Stephen Doyle Off The Ball

Welcome all to another week of Cill’s Cuig. Anyone else still watching Troy Parrott’s masterclass in Hungary from Sunday? Just me? If not, here are five other bits on TV this weekend to flick on instead. In the meantime, I’m off to book my flights to America.

AZ Alkmaar V Shelbourne, Thursday 27 November, 5.45, Premier Sports 1

For the week that’s in it, I had to include that glorious man Troy Parrott in this article somewhere. While his Alkmaar side’s Eredivisie game with Heerenveen won’t be televised in Ireland this weekend, their next European game is being shown on Premier Sports next week, and against Irish opposition no less.

While I’m breaking the ancient laws of Cill’s Cuig by including a midweek game, it feels appropriate in this scenario to do it for our Troy Parrott.

Ireland V South Africa, Saturday 5.40, RTÉ 2

Now so, back to this weekend’s events. Ireland look to round off their Quilters Nations Series with a win when World Champions South Africa roll into the Aviva Stadium on Saturday evening.

The sides last met when they split the two-game series in South Africa in 2024, when Ciaran Frawley’s last-gasp drop at goal stole a famous win for Ireland. The visitors will be favourites here, however with a full house at the Aviva and bad blood set to boil over between the sides, anything could happen.

Dingle V Mungret St Paul’s, Sunday 1.00, Clubber

Newly crowned Limerick football champions Mungret St Paul’s contest the Munster Senior Football Championship semi-final as they travel to Tralee to take on Kerry champions Dingle.

Dingle boast an embarrassment of riches, such as Tom O’Sullivan, the Geaneys, and the AFL’s Mark O’Connor. Mungret will be up against it as they look to reach the Munster final after winning their maiden Limerick title a fortnight ago.

Inter V Milan, Saturday 7.45, TNT Sports 1

Unfortunately for Irish fans, the international break is over, as domestic play resumes this weekend. The undoubted pick of the games across the weekend takes place at San Siro on Saturday night. Old foes Inter and Milan renew rivalries in the first Derby Della Madonnina of the season.

Inter have rattled off eight wins from their first 11 games under new manager Christian Chivu, while Max Allegri’s Milan trail them by just two points going into a crucial part of the season.

Arsenal V Tottenham, Sunday 4.30, Sky Sports Premier League

In another local derby, Thomas Frank takes his Spurs’ side to the Emirates Stadium for the first time to take on table-topping Arsenal.

Arsenal are missing some key faces here, as Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, and Martin Odegaard all suffered knock with their respective international sides over the break.

That’s my lot for the week, folks. I’ll go back to watching THAT goal again for a few more hours. Yes, you know the one.
