After a trophy-laden 15-year spell as a member of the Limerick senior hurling panel, three-time All-Star Declan Hannon has called it a day on his inter-county career.

The Adare man led the Treaty County to five All-Ireland medals, seven Munster championships, and two national league titles as captain. He will forever be remembered as the first Limerick man in 45 years to climb the Hogan Stand to collect Liam McCarthy in 2018, ending their long drought against Galway.

Hannon entered the panel in 2010 as a half-forward, before going on to take to life at number six like a duck to water.

“It has been one of the greatest honours of my life to wear the Limerick jersey, to represent my county, and share the highest of highs with people I love,” Hannon said in a statement. “Hurling has been a major part of my life since I was a child. It tested me, it humbled me, and it gave me moments I will carry in my heart forever.

I want to thank my club Adare GAA and the Adare community, all the coaches and teammates from underage up to senior level, your guidance and encouragement shaped the path ahead. I will never forget returning home to the village in 2018. That feeling will live with me always,” he said.

Hannon was appointed Limerick captain ahead of the 2018 season, a role he would hold until just last year when Cian Lynch took his place.

“Declan has worn the jersey with pride and excellence throughout his career,” the county board’s statement reads. “His leadership was quiet and understated, exemplified by his relentless drive to be the best he could be and to help those around him be the best that they could be. The team always came first with Declan.  He always led by example, assured and at ease in the midst of the chaos of championship hurling.”

While Hannon will continue playing with Adare in 2026, his presence will no doubt be sorely missed in John Kiely’s dressing room as Limerick aim to return to the top of hurling.
