Treaty United 2-2 Kerry FC
A 90th-minute Cian Curtis penalty saw the points shared between Treaty United and Kerry FC in the Markets Field on Friday night.
Treaty United now sit bottom of the league on one point after four games. Kerry leave the Markets Field one place above the hosts with two points.
The conditions were perfect as both sides came into this fixture looking for their first win of the season.
Kerry FC started the brightest, winning a free kick in a dangerous area inside the opening two minutes. Treaty captain Mark Walsh picked up an early yellow card for the foul, but Kerry couldn’t take advantage as Fionn Barrett overhit the cross.
A tame 10 minutes followed, with both defences well on top. The first real chance came after 13 minutes when Vincent Borden drilled a low ball across the face of the goal, but no Kerry player was there to finish.
Treaty created their first opening moments later. Ben Feeney found space on the right side of the box and forced Harry Halwax into a smart save.
It was the away side who would break the deadlock, however. Barret’s free kick found Ewan Lee, who calmly slotted past Jack Brady to delight the Kerry supporters behind the goal.
Treaty nearly hit back straight away, but Jason Oyenuga dragged his shot narrowly wide. Sean McGrath was the second player to enter the referee’s book when he was penalised for a foul outside his own box just before the half-hour mark. The resulting free kick struck the wall, which was met with loud moans from the home supporters.
Kerry appeared content defending their one-goal lead, inviting pressure from Treaty for the rest of the half. The home side was unable to create any further chances and went in at the break trailing 1-0.
Treaty were almost level a minute into the second half when Feeney saw his effort strike the post. The second half continued just as the first half finished. The home team had most of the ball but were struggling to find the breakthrough.
Their pressure was rewarded in the 66th minute when the Kerry defense allowed a long throw-in to bounce twice. A headed clearance found Cian Curtis, who saw his scuffed volley bobble into the bottom corner.
With Treaty seemingly on top, they looked more likely to push on for a winner. However, just minutes later, Kerry were awarded a penalty.
The Treaty defence appeared to believe the ball had gone out of play when Sean O’Connell’s pull-back found substitute Eric Koufie, who was tripped in the area. Cian Murphy made no mistake, slotting the ball into the bottom right corner to score his first competitive goal for the club.
After the goal, Treaty again held most of the possession as they searched for an equaliser. With just a minute of normal time remaining, they were awarded a penalty of their own. Curtis stepped up and sent Halwax the wrong way to claim his second of the night, grabbing the ball immediately in search of a late winner.
They almost found it deep into injury time, but Nwankwo’s header went just over the bar. The referees’ final whistle followed shortly after, with a share of the spoils confirmed.
