Limerick star Gillane out for Cork clash

Limerick have named their fifteen to take on Cork in their first Munster Championship round-robin game. The most notable name missing from manager John Kiely’s team is that of star forward Aaron Gillane.

The 30-year-old was confirmed to have suffered a calf injury in training on Tuesday night and will miss the Treaty County’s opening two games against Cork and Clare.

Gillane played a starring role in Limerick’s last meeting with the Rebels, scoring 1-7 to fire the team to victory in the league final on Easter Sunday.

Limerick enjoyed a bye last weekend, whereas Cork got their campaign off to a flyer with a four-point victory against Tipperary at Semple Stadium in a rematch of last year’s All-Ireland Final.

Rebels boss Ben O’Connor has named an unchanged team for Sunday’s game at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, as Cork look to pick up their fourth championship win against Limerick in the last three years.

Limerick, on the other hand, will be looking to banish the demons of their most recent championship clash, when they were forced to hand over their Munster crown after losing on penalties in their own back yard.
