Positive weekend for Limerick sides in National League

Limerick sides had a much-improved weekend in the National League as the Limerick Sport Eagles, Limerick Sport Huskies and Limerick Celtics women’s side all picked up wins.

But we start on a slightly more negative side as the Limerick Celtics men’s side were handed their second loss in three games. In their maiden Super League season, they suffered a tough 81-73 defeat against Belfast Star at De La Salle College. The first half went according to plan for the Celtics with a 14-point lead at halftime. A.J Williams had 16 of his 22 points in the first half and the Celtics began to improve after the break, extending that lead to 18 midway through the third.

American Austin Rotroff picked up a knee injury that kept him out of the final quarter as the momentum swayed in the direction of the men from Belfast. Star took the lead at the start of the final quarter and did not surrender it for the remainder of the game as Belfast moved to 3-0 for the season. It leaves Celtics in 9th with a record of 1-2. The men have a double header next weekend in UL Arena as they host Garvey’s Tralee Warriors in UL Arena on Friday night and then host Energywise Ireland Neptune on Monday afternoon at 3.

Celtics women got their season back on track after a rough weekend last week up in Lisburn as they defeated University of Galway Mystics on Sunday afternoon. Galway had a slow start to the game with two 9-point quarters to bring them into the half-time break 10 points behind the Celtics, who provided a much more positive showing on offense this week. American guard Sidney Richards had a well-rounded 12-point performance also adding six assists and eight rebounds to her stat-line.

It was a standout performance from newly acquired Katie Black for the girls in green as she managed to pull in 19 rebounds, which was ten more than the next highest on the team. The Celtics ladies will be looking to go 3-1 and start making a push to the summit of the Women’s Division One standings when they host Templeogue on Saturday in Crescent College as they get their first home game of the season.

Limerick Sport Huskies managed to pick up their first win of the Division One season as they defeated the Cleveland Rockets in Lisburn 76-69. It was a sensational performance from Clara Gomez who dropped a triple-double showing with 18 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists.

In a game where the lead changed hands on eight separate occasions, the Huskies never fell behind in the second half. They managed to build as much as a 12-point lead at one point in the third quarter. And as much as the Rockets pushed Limerick at times, the Huskies offence got rolling enough to hold off a stern test in the Rockets side that had just beaten Celtics last week. Huskies will hope to get to 2-2 next weekend as they face Moy Tolka Rovers in Dublin.

We finish in Tallaght where Limerick Sport Eagles travelled to face Templeogue and managed to pick up win number two of the season thanks to a late winner from Alex Carlisle for the Eagles to secure a 71-69 triumph. Elsewhere for Eagles, Ryan Leonard and Tobias Christensen combined for 41 of the Eagles’ 71 points. Christensen also pulled in eight boards for good measure.

Templeogue led by as much as 15 in a game where the lead changed hands 10 times. The teams went back and forth, but the Eagles did not get in front on the score line in the second half until the final three minutes of the game. The win sees Eagles rise to sixth in the Division One table and are tied on record with every team ranked second to eighth. The Eagles will be looking to rise further up the table and make it 3-1 as they take on Titans BC in UL Arena this Sunday.
