THE CURTAINS have officially come down on Clare GAA icon Shane O’Donnell’s hurling career.
O’Donnell’s Éire Óg were defeated 1-24 to 2-13 in the Clare SHC semi-final at the hands of Inagh–Kilnamona.
The 32-year-old — who has a PhD in microbiology — announced his retirement from hurling earlier this year with the intention of emigrating to Australia with his partner.
In his final inter–county season, the Ennis native led The Banner County to an All-Ireland semi-final before narrowly losing out to Limerick in Croke Park.
O’Donnell had lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup twice in saffron and blue, his first coming in his breakout season at senior level in 2013.
He scored a hat-trick in the All-Ireland final to end a 16-year wait for Clare to climb the steps of the Hogan Stand.
The 2024 Hurler of the Year also claimed three All-Star awards and two National Hurling League titles during his illustrious inter-county career.
After an incredible 14 seasons with Clare, it was only right he would play his final hurling game in Cusack Park.
The same turf in which O’Donnell represented his county year after year and also ended a 35-year drought for Éire Óg in 2025, when they claimed the Clare senior hurling title.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SWAN SONG
Unfortunately for O’Donnell, his final match would be a tough loss to a strong Inagh-Kilnamona team.
Éire Óg were unable to retain their senior hurling title in O’Donnell’s swan song season.
After a flawless group stage and a commanding quarter-final victory over Wolfe Tones na Sionna, the Ennis outfit looked poised to repeat last year’s heroics, but it wasn’t to be.
O’Donnell scored two points from half forward in the semi-final clash but was outshone by Inagh-Kilnamona’s sharpshooter, Aidan McCarthy.
McCarthy scored 0-13 to springboard his club into the county final, as they search for their first senior hurling title since the amalgamation of Inagh and Kilnamona in 2008.
Standing in their way is Group 4 table-toppers Kilmaley, on the hunt for their first title in 22 years.
While two semi-final losses this season wasn’t the send–off O’Donnell would have wanted or deserved, he will be looked back on fondly for his heroics at club and county level by many across county Clare.
