After 38 years in business, popular fashion and accessories retailer Glitzi Bitz has announced the upcoming closure of its Limerick city centre branch.
The family owned store confirmed on Sunday, November 9 through their social media that they will shut the doors of their Cruise’s Street branch after Christmas, with operations shifting fully online.
“This isn’t goodbye – it’s a heartfelt see you later. We hope our styles will live on in your wardrobes and that the memories will carry forward. We can’t thank you all enough.”
Speaking to The Limerick Voice, co-owner Sharon Conway said the decision marks an emotional moment for the family, particularly her mother Finola ,who first opened the business nearly four decades ago
“As an independent small business, I feel let down. We don’t look for much. After 38 years here, we’ve put our heart and soul into this business. We have 12 other shops open, but this is where it all began.”
She believes there is a general decline in people visiting the city centre; “There’s nothing in it anymore. The footfall hasnt helped with the takings and costings.
“Its too hard to make money when paying for insurance, lighting, rent and rates.”
When reminiscing on their legacy, Sharon emotionally admits “It’s the end of an era.”
The untimely closure of Limerick’s Glitzi Bitz does not leave her without hope, as she prepares for the company’s future online.
“Of course I’m optimistic, I wouldn’t be doing it otherwise. You have to start with optimism. I have the right product, I know the quality, I know what sells.”
Sharon also issued a heartfelt reminder to the people of Limerick not to forget local businesses as they adapt their shopping habits.
“If you’re not coming into town anymore, try to shop online with Limerick-based or Irish shops. It keeps money in the country. When people see the face behind the product, they know they’re buying from a genuine person.
“Go with the face you know. You can return items, you can ask questions. I really hope people shop and support Irish businesses online.”
The Conways are inviting customers to bid a final farewell in-store, as they sell off their remaining stock at a reduced price.
