Limerick native Caroline Conroy O’Malley has been nominated for the National Volunteer of the Year award by ALONE. The prestigious award ceremony will take place in December.
ALONE is a national organisation dedicated to assisting older people with ageing in their own homes.
She began volunteering here just two years ago, where she was matched up with 102-year-old Ann. The duo have weekly catch-ups over tea and have formed a strong bond. Caroline playfully remarks “She is full of devilment and fun, and the highlight of my week is when I call to her.”
Speaking on the importance of organisations like ALONE, Caroline encourages more people to get involved. “They might never speak to anyone all day, every day, but by someone calling and knocking on the door, it means they feel special.
Somebody is taking time out of their day to spend time with them and call into them, be involved in their life, listen to their stories, assist them, and take away the isolation. I would encourage anyone to go and give back.”
Volunteering has always been a central part of Caroline’s life
When she was in her twenties, she was a team leader at Samaritans. “I loved the process of volunteering and helping people out, being the first port of call when people rang.”
However, as is the case for most working mothers, life got too busy. She had to take an extended break, but always knew she would return to her passion.
ALONE was the perfect opportunity for this; “I always knew I loved elderly people, having the chats and a bit of fun.”
Her volunteering experience with ALONE began with an interview, after which Caroline was matched with Ann, based on their similar personality. Now, with the prospect of a national award for her services, it is clear this Limerick woman has made an enormous positive impact on her local community.
Aside from her volunteering, Caroline is known for her flair for fashion, recently reaching a milestone of 10,000 followers on Instagram. She has taken an organic approach with her Instagram page, @caroline.lives.life.in.style, with none of her posts being paid for or sponsored.
“My page is all about positivity, confidence, and enjoying life to the fullest. I love sharing my style, my travels, a bit of fun, and everyday moments that make life brighter.”
Encouraged by a friend to join social media and start posting, Caroline uploads a variety of content, covering fashion, travel, fitness, and family life.
Caroline has always had a passion for style and self-expression. As a teenager, she loved experimenting with her style, whether that was dyeing her hair or dressing up. Her creativity is not only in fashion but also in art, even winning competitions in her youth.
She continues to channel her creative energy into her fashion. Speaking about her style, she says, “When I get up and put on my outfit, I feel a lot more confident. It affects my mental health as well. If I get up every morning and get dressed up and I feel good about myself, I am a lot more positive, and I feel my day goes better.”
Caroline is a passionate advocate for businesses in Limerick. She often posts her favourite shops on her feed. “It is important to keep these businesses going locally. All these people put their hearts, souls and income into setting up these shops. It’s good to keep our city lively and keep shops in our city.”
Her hidden gems in Limerick include Café Rose on Roches Street. “The food is lovely, a nice atmosphere, and there is a warm feeling when you walk through the door”. Also a firm favourite is Smetanko Gift Shop, located upstairs in Arthur’s Quay, “the most amazing knitwear and toys are created there.”
Starting an Instagram page has been a rewarding experience for Caroline Conroy O‘Malley. “Through this page, I’ve made new friends, supported local businesses and found such joy in being creative.” She emphasises the value of self-care, exercise, and community. Her piece of advice to everyone is to look after yourself, “because when you look after yourself, mind, body and soul, it will truly show on the outside.”
