New regulations introduced for learner drivers.

STRICTER regulations for learner drivers came into effect on November 1.

This means people are now limited to two learner permits before taking their driving test. To renew a third or fourth permit, proof of a previous driving test within the last 2 years is essential.

After seven years, if you have not passed your driving test, you cannot renew learner permits and are required to restart the licensing process from the beginning.

Driving instructor James Dillon from Adare Drive Wise School of Motoring told the Limerick Voice that this increases the pressure on learner drivers to progress through the system. There has been an excessive number of learner permit holders over the past 15 years. “This is an area where learner permit holders weren’t bothering. They’re now being forced to do it.”

Learner drivers are still required to pass their theory test to receive their permit and take 12 EDT (Essential Driver Training) lessons before applying for a driving test.

Waiting lists for tests are still long. For example, a Category B test has an estimated invitation for the end of January if booked today.
