Gardaí in Limerick seized over €490,000 of suspected cocaine in a van in Hospital, Co Limerick on Saturday.

One man in his 20’s has been arrested in connection with the seizure after the van he was driving was stopped by Gardaí attached to the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit as part of ongoing investigations into the sale and supply of controlled drugs.

Gardaí discovered the suspected cocaine, with an estimated street value of €493,920, along with €3,000 in cash, and several electronic items.

A follow-up search at a residence in Castletroy unearthed a small quantity of cannabis and €2,075 in cash.

The man is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

The suspected drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis

The seizure took place as part of “Operation Tara”, which the Gardaí describe as “an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy” which aims to “disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels.”
