It has been a week of celebrations for the LGBTQ+ community of Limerick and Clare, who are now preparing to host the first Irish EuroPride event in 2028. According to the European Pride Organisers Association, over 120 member organisations of EPOA voted, and the West of Ireland secured the win with an impressive 70% of the votes. The organisation said: “The event will showcase Ireland’s rich culture, heritage, and welcoming spirit; bringing a uniquely rural and inclusive Pride experience to the Wild Atlantic Way.”
Councillor and Príomh Chomhairleoir Catherine Slattery expressed her approval of the plans.
“I am absolutely thrilled that the bid to bring EuroPride 2028 to Limerick and Clare has been successful. I was honoured, as Príomh Chomhairleoir, to have met with the European Pride Organisers delegation during their visit to Limerick during the bid process.”
Held across various European cities each year, it is a month-long event dedicated to the queer community. Members of the community and allies alike can take part in a range of activities, including live music, conferences, and a pride parade. Cllr Slattery stated her gratitude towards all organisations involving themselves in planning the festivities.
“The dedication shown by Limerick Pride, The Outing Queer Arts Collective, QuareClare, Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau and the many volunteers, community leaders and civic partners has been truly inspiring. Our meeting with the delegation allowed us to share our ambitions, to show the warmth, vibrancy and inclusive nature of our community, and to reassure them of Limerick’s capacity to host an event of this magnitude.”
With the announcement coming in the year where Ireland commemorates a decade of marriage equality, the decision to hold the first Irish EuroPride in the southwest is certainly a historic one for the queer community. Cllr Slattery concluded by acknowledging the significance of the decision:
“This is not just a win for Limerick and Clare. It is a win for everyone who believes in inclusion, equality, visibility, and community. I am committed to doing everything in my power to support the next stages of planning to ensure EuroPride 2028 has a lasting and positive impact.”
