Funding has been secured for the construction of a new Garda station in Castletroy under the National Development Plan.

The Office of Public Works has completed a scoping exercise to identify a suitable site in the area. Fianna Fáil Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan confirmed that provision for the new station has been included in the plan.

Fine Gael’s Minister of State for Housing and Limerick TD Kieran O’Donnell shared his support for the project. “I have long campaigned on the need for the Garda Station to be based in the high-growth area of Castletroy and Annacotty,” he said. “This news is very welcome.”

In the newly-revealed Budget 2026, Minister O’Callaghan announced €5.78 billion in current expenditure and €390 million in capital investment for the Justice sector next year.

While Minister O’Donnell did not confirm a timeframe for completion, though he said the project was “well underway.”

Fianna Fáil Senator Dee Ryan also welcomed the announcement. “Castletroy has seen a rapid increase in population in recent years, with families and young people choosing to make their homes here,” she said. “With that growth comes the need for enhanced services, and a dedicated Garda presence is a key part of that.”

The Castletroy area has a resident population of over 16,000, and the University of Limerick further increases these numbers with its student population of over 18,000.

The idea of a Garda station in the area was first proposed in 2019. In 2023, Fianna Fáil Councillor Joe Pond and TD Willy O’Dea collected 2,000 signatures from local residents supporting the idea for a Castletroy Garda Station.
