Despite a late rally, Munster came up short in Scotstoun against table-topping Glasgow Warriors on a scoreline of 31-22. The Round 11 loss sees Munster drop to 6th in the United Rugby Championship table following their stellar start to the season.
Franco Smith’s men were missing 19 players to Scotland duty but still managed to jump out to an early 28-5 lead. The bonus point was secured before the break with tries by Ollie Smith, Dan Lancaster, Olujare Oguntibeju and Josh McKay, all converted by Lancaster. Munster’s only score came from an Ethan Coughlan intercept, something of a trademark for the young Ennis halfback.
Tom Wood, son of former Irish international Keith Wood, entered the fray early in the second half in place of Tony Butler. Paddy Patterson joined him, completing the replacement of the Ennis halfbacks. Meanwhile, Gavin Coombes entered for a brief cameo in the second row before taking a heavy knock a few minutes later and being withdrawn, forcing Fineen Wycherley back onto the field.
Dan Kelly managed to get the visitors on the scoreboard first in the second half. He broke the tackle of his former Leicester Tigers teammate Lancaster on his way to score a superb solo try. Brian Gleeson and Diarmuid Kilgallen made sure the final minutes were a nervy affair for the hosts with a try a piece to bring the score to 28-22 with 15 minutes to go.

Lancaster settled the crowd with a penalty in the 73rd minute to bring the final scoreline to 31-22, denying Munster the losing bonus point. In the final minutes, the Warriors lay siege to Munster’s line. The visitors stood firm, for nothing other than pride and points difference at that stage, with Jack O’Donoghue earning a late yellow card for his efforts.
Munster have a welcome break in order to regroup and refocus ahead of their clash with Zebre in Thomond Park on Saturday 28 February.
