With plenty of sports on TV this Bank Holiday Weekend, sports reporter Cillian Horan returns with Cill’s Cuig.
“I’m Back” – Bobby Zamora
The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.
We are back.
- Australian Open Finals, Sunday, TNT Sports 1
At the time of writing, I am eagerly awaiting the men’s semi-finals of the Australian Open. World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz gears up to take on the German Alexander Zverev, while Jannik Sinner bids to continue his attempt for three AO titles in a row against Novak Djokovic, who has an outside chance of sealing an insane 25th Grand Slam.
The men’s final will be accompanied by an intriguing women’s final between heavy favourite Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina on Sunday.
If the two finals provide the same entertainment level as the rest of the tournament, we are in for some epic tennis at Rod Laver Arena.
- Waterford V Limerick, Sunday 2.00, TG4 App
After a successful Munster Senior League campaign in January, John Kiely and the Limerick hurlers received a bye in the first round of the National League.
They begin the inter-county season proper with a trip to Walsh Park on Sunday to take on Waterford.
Peter Queally’s side suffered a damaging defeat against reigning league champions Cork last time out and will be looking to kickstart their league campaign here.
This game won’t be shown live on TV, rather on the TG4 app at 2. There will be deferred coverage of the game on TG4 on Sunday evening.
- Donegal V Kerry, Sunday 2.00, TG4
Jim McGuinness’ Donegal team enjoyed a fine win in headquarters against Ger Brennan’s Dublin, but will be out for revenge in this rematch of last year’s All-Ireland final against Kerry.
Kerry come into this one off the back of a win against Roscommon last weekend but will still be without their Dingle players for this trip to Ballyshannon.
The Kerry faithful, who generally don’t travel this time of year, will be fairly wary of another trip up to Ulster, as Jack O’Connor’s men await what tricks Jimmy has up his sleeve this time. The Donegal crowd will be hoping they’re more impactful than the stunts he pulled back in July.

- Shamrock Rovers V Derry City, Saturday 5.00, LOI TV
The curtain-raiser to the League of Ireland season takes place on Saturday evening. Last year’s double winners Shamrock Rovers take on Derry City in this year’s President’s Cup.
Tiernan Lynch has bolstered his Derry ranks impressively this summer, with marquee signing James McClean returning to the club from Wrexham. James’ brother Patrick has also joined, alongside other proven LOI talents James Clarke and Darragh Markey.
It’s hard to back against Rovers as favourites for the season, but this will be an excellent test of their two-in-a-row credentials.
- Manchester United V Fulham, Sunday 2.00, Sky Sports Main Event
After gaining six points from his first two games, Michael Carrick’s mighty successful reign as Manchester United interim manager continues with the visit of Fulham to Old Trafford at Sunday teatime.
United’s win at the Emirates was the first time league leaders Arsenal have lost at home all season. Carrick’s team will enter Sunday’s clash with their tails up and in great form.
