Contracts signed on Friday for Nos. 20- 24 on Wickham Street will see the site transformed into a new pocket park.

THIS event took place on Friday, when the mayor signed documents that would give the city control of properties numbered 20 to 24 on Wickham Street.

The city’s plan for the acquisition is to transform the previously fenced-off area and facilitate the construction of a new pocket park in the city centre.

The site was formerly a garden that has been left abandoned. Over the last year, the city has worked to clean the area up.

A previous development in the area didn’t go ahead, so the Mayor’s Office decided to use the mayoral funds to buy the properties and transfer them to Limerick City for redevelopment.

When asked to comment on the project, John Moran, mayor of Limerick, told the Limerick Voice:

“Our garden team have come up with a really cool design for people to just hang out in this area, and it’s all about the idea of Limerick being pig town and so the theme of the whole garden is actually all about pig town”

In the end, this new pocket park is designed to be part of the historical zone, nicknamed “Pig town”, where four bacon factories operate, in the hopes of contributing to the social life in this economically important zone of Limerick centre.
