Registrations are now open for the second annual 7-a-side Charity Football Tournament at the University of Limerick (UL). The event will take place on Good Friday, 3 April.
The tournament will be held on the 3G pitches at UL’s North Campus, with all proceeds going to Dóchas, a Midwest-based charity providing vital autism support services to children and young people across the region.
Off the back of a successful inaugural tournament last year, organiser Michael Bergin has transformed it into a standalone annual charity occasion.
“Last year we had ten teams turn up in the pouring rain and play football for five hours; it was a magnificent day out. We had teams of all abilities and age groups, with every side getting a minimum of four games. The atmosphere was fantastic despite the weather”.
Bergin has partnered with Dóchas as the sole beneficiary, as it holds personal significance.
“I’ve partnered with Dóchas because I’ve seen first-hand the incredible support they provide. My daughter Mary-Kate attends their programmes every weekend and always returns home with a huge smile on her face. I can’t think of a more deserving cause.”
Tournament Details
The tournament will run from 11.00 to 16.00, with each match consisting of two 12-minute halves. All games will be officiated by a referee, and a full rules document is available to all registered participants.
Prizes, equipment, and refreshments will be provided on the day by sponsors Decathlon and SuperValu Castletroy. A social evening will follow the tournament at The Old Quarter, which will provide finger food for all participants.
Last year’s inaugural tournament was won by Barely Athletic, also known to many as regulars in the UL Friday Nightowls Soccer League. The side lifted the newly commissioned trophy following a victory over Thomondgate in the final.
