Cills’ Cuig: The best sporting events on TV this weekend

Sports Reporter Cillian Horan brings you what to watch on TV this weekend. Photo: Andrew Moynihan.

“Three of the best, he’s made them pay! It’s a day he’ll never forget!” – Martin Tyler

We’ve made it to the third rendition of Cill’s Cuig, folks. Thanks to all for reading along so far. Here are the sporting events I’ll be glued to on TV over the weekend.

  1. Newcastle West v Mungret St Pauls, Sunday 3.30, LimerickGAATV

Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale, is the location as Mungret St Paul’s take on Newcastle West in the Irish Wire Products SFC final on Sunday.

Keep an eye on the Limerick Voice pages this week for extensive previews and reaction from Sunday’s showpiece.

  1. Ireland V Japan, Saturday 12.40, RTÉ 2

Ireland kick off the home section of the Autumn Nations Series with the visit of Japan to Dublin. They’ll be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to New Zealand last time out.

It’s a strange kick-off time, and expect a strange, experimental lineup from Ireland too. Assistant coach Johnny Sexton made it clear there would be changes from last week’s defeat in Chicago in his press conference this week.

  1. Ballyhale Shamrocks V Kilcormac-Killoughey, Sunday 1.45, TG4

TG4 has brought us some excellent action in the last few weeks from the club championships, and that continues Sunday afternoon when Kilkenny giants Ballyhale Shamrocks meet Offaly champions Kilcormac-Killoughey at Nowlan Park.

There’s lots of notable inter-county names on both sides, but perhaps the biggest matchup will be between Ballyhale’s TJ Reid and KK’s young gun Adam Screeney.

Ballyhale are currently the bookie’s favourite to win the Leinster, with Kilcormac-Killoughey sitting in third. This quarter-final is sure to be massive.

  1. Manchester City V Liverpool, Sunday 4.30, Sky Sports Premier League

Old rivals Manchester City and Liverpool meet again, as the champions roll into Manchester for Sunday’s Etihad clash.

Liverpool’s dodgy start to their title defence has been well publicised, however they will be spurred on by impressive wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid.

As for Manchester City, they have Erling Haaland. Need I say any more?

  1. Shamrock Rovers V Cork City, Sunday 3.3o, RTÉ 2

Shamrock Rovers look to complete a league and cup double this weekend in the FAI Cup final against Cork City. The two sides had differing fortunes in the league. While Rovers secured their fifth title in six years, Cork sat rooted to the bottom of the table for the majority of the campaign. They were eventually relegated on just 24 points.

In their four meetings this season, Rovers beat Cork 4-1 twice in Tallaght, while they split the points with a pair of 1-1 draws at Turner’s Cross.
