Crowley’s class edges it for Munster in Thomond thriller

Munster Rugby logoJack Crowley showed his class as Munster edged Cardiff in Thomond Park.

URC: Munster 23 Cardiff 20

In a game shaped as much by the boot as by the ball, Munster battled to a gritty 23-20 win over Cardiff at a blustery Thomond Park. In the swirling aftermath of Storm Amy, it came down to nerve and accuracy off the kicking tee – and Munster held theirs when it mattered the most.

With the game firmly on a knife-edge entering the final moments, Munster methodically marched down the field inside the Cardiff 22 metre line.

Following several phases of pressure, Jack Crowley slipped into the pocket and coolly converted a drop goal in the 76th minute to extend the lead to 23-15, essentially securing the first home win of the season in front of the Munster faithful.

Cardiff did respond once again through Tom Bowen, who secured a hat-trick of tries in the dying embers of the game, but it was too little too late for the Welsh side as the Munster men made it two wins out of two to start their URC campaign.

The visitors leave Limerick with two losing bonus points, but in a game of fine margins, it was the battle from the kicking tee that tipped the scales in Munster’s favour.

Sluggish start for the hosts

Cardiff started the brighter of the two sides, with Josh Adams capitalising on a pinpoint kick in behind the Munster defence by Callum Sheedy to convert the try and give the visitors a 5-0 early lead.

No such accuracy for Sheedy, however, with the conversion attempt, which would prove to be a common theme throughout on a frustrating night for the Welsh fly-half.

Munster responded on the half-hour mark as Ruadhán Quinn finished off a flowing passage of play to tie the game at 5 points apiece. Jack Crowley’s conversion attempt mirrored that of his Welsh counterpart as it sailed past the post from a narrow angle to keep the game at level pegging.

Momentum began to shift in Cardiff’s favour in the minutes approaching halftime as Munster’s Alex Nankivell was penalised for not rolling away from a ruck, presenting Sheedy with a chance to give his side the lead, but the Cardiff number 10 could not find his range from 32 metres out.

This put no chink in the Cardiff armour however as the Welsh giants kept the pressure piling on the Munster men. A scrum infringement from Munster’s Jeremy Loughman gave the visitors another chance in the closing stages of the first half to take the lead into the break.

Cardiff opted to go for the corner, and their forwards mounted a sustained assault on the Munster Line. Under intense pressure, Munster were reduced to 14 men as Gavin Coombes was yellow carded for illegal use of hands in the ruck.

Despite the numerical disadvantage and relentless pressure, the Munster rear guard held firm, aided by a loose pass from Cardiff’s Johan Mulder to turn the ball over and end the first half with the sides still deadlocked at 5 points apiece.

Second Half: Back-and-Forth Brilliance

Cardiff came out for the second half much like how they ended the first half, as they capitalised on another unforced error by Munster who lost the ball from their own lineout.

They responded with brilliant counter attacking rugby as winger Tom Bowen put the cherry on top of a flowing passage of play for the visitors to retake the lead just 3 minutes into the second half. Sheedy’s third missed kick of the night left the score at 10-5.

Back to a full complement, Munster regained control, and it was Coombes who made amends for his earlier yellow card as the number eight forced his way over the Cardiff line with 52 minutes played.

Crowley made the game’s first successful conversion to give Munster a narrow 12-10 lead.

Bowen responded swiftly for the Welsh side collecting another incisive pass from Sheedy, but once again, his conversion attempt went begging and Cardiff took a 15-12 lead in Limerick.

Munster however abided by the mantra of their fans song as they stood up and fought and put the visitors straight on the backfoot with a brilliant kick from Crowley from the restart.

That pinned them inside their own five metre line where a comedy of unforced errors let the hosts retake control of the game.

The ensuing lineout led to a Cardiff knock on and the scrum which resulted from the knock-on gifted Munster a penalty,

Munster opted to tap and go without hesitation and Diarmuid Barron powered over to restore the Munster lead 17-15.

Moments later, the hosts extended their lead as Crowley slotted a penalty between the posts, earned by a strong run from Alex Nankivell making it 20-15.

Crowley’s drop goal in the 76th minute proved the difference for Clayton McMillan and his men to pick up a home victory in his first game in Thomond Park.
