Last year’s beaten semi-finalists will meet in Rathkeale for Sunday’s novel final between Newcastle West and Mungret St Paul’s. The former are hoping to win their eighth Fr. Casey Cup, while it is Mungret’s second-ever appearance in a senior decider.

The Magpies come into the final off the back of an eight-point semi-final win over Fr Casey’s. Yet, not before extra-time was required to see off their West Limerick neighbours.

Fr Casey’s led in injury time but Eoin Hurley kicked late and secured extra time for Newcastle West. He and Emmet Rigter combined brilliantly in the first half of extra time to see off Casey’s.

Meanwhile, in the red corner, Mungret St Paul’s pulled off quite the upset knocking out defending champions Adare in the other semi-final. Down three points with five minutes to go, they went on to win with Shane Barry getting the crucial point in the 63rd minute. Failing to register a score in the third quarter was contrasted with a vital seven point showing in the last 15 minutes.

They can look to their attacking firepower with Barry, John Hutton, and Brendan Giltenane proving a potent full forward line.

Frank Corcoran at wing back is a constant threat on a counter attack, while Diarmaid Hynes provides a great impact from the bench.

It’s the fourth final in five years for Newcastle West, and that is no accident. Captain Iain Corbett has racked up eight goals in this year’s championship, and their bench might just get them over the line with Rigter and Todd Donovan offering able assistance.

These two sides indeed met in Round 1 of this year’s championship, with Newcastle West coming out one-point winners. A nice taster to whet the appetite for Sunday. Limerick Voice will have a full match report following the final.
