Na Piarsaigh 2-25 Doon 2-18 (AET)

It is a ninth John Daly Cup for Na Piarsaigh, who had to grind out 90 minutes over Doon before they could call themselves champions once again.

Less than five minutes in the second half to go, Na Piarsaigh’s single point lead catapulted into jeopardy when Darragh O’Donovan made a smart run off Eddie Stokes’ shoulder. He carried it inside and stuck it past Shane Dowling. The assister slotted a point of his own to follow, in an attempt to lob a wayward Dowling.

Substitute Conor Boylan’s impact was already being felt for Na Piarsaigh, and it was he who came to the rescue when he gobbled up a high delivery from deep, turned three Doon men and levelled affairs with a goal.

Doon indeed had three chances to lead once more before full-time. Gareth Thomas was unsuccessful, Dowling pulled one shot down, and Adam English’s free also dropped short.

To be honest, there was only one team that showed up in extra time, with the victors outscoring Doon 0-8 to 0-2 across both halves. The depth of the city side’s panel proved vital as the game wore on. The introduction of Boylan after 50 minutes resulted in 1-1 for the former inter-county man.

Scores from Keith Dempsey (2f) , Boylan, Ronan Lynch, Casey (2) and Daithí Dempsey sent the men in sky blue and white on their way to the title.

Na Piarsaigh started as well as they could ask for. They quickly opened up a 0-2 to 0-0 lead with scores from Adrian Breen and a Kevin Downes free. That score came as a result of a late tackle from Richie English on talisman Casey, which resulted in a yellow for the former.

Wing-forward Dean Coleman opened up Doon’s account not too long after, quickly answered by Will Henn on the other end. Mike Foley kept up Na Piarsaigh’s strong start with a booming effort from over 65 yards, complimented by Kevin Downes notching a second free. Adam English kept Doon ticking with two further frees before Daithí Dempsey pushed the city side three clear after 15 minutes.

Doon, fortuitously some might say, raised the first green flag of the game when Jack Ryan’s pointed effort clipped the tall right post, bouncing down to Dean Coleman who was available to tap it in past Shane Dowling.

The goal drove on Doon who took the lead just moments later with English winning the opposition kick-out and pointing. Casey, who was being closely watched by Barry Murphy all day long, got his first score to end the mini drought. Pat Ryan and William O’Donoghue traded scores before the first lull of the game came before half time.

The half ended with two further points from English (1f), and one further from Kevin Downes (f) to have nothing split the sides at the break.

A good first-half start was bettered by Na Piarsaigh’s second-half opening with Adrian Breen finding the back of the net after 31 minutes. The effort crawled in, with Darragh Stapleton visibly frustrated at the outcome. A JJ Carey point had Shane O’Neill’s side five clear yet Doon never said die.

Eddie Stokes slotted a single and Adam English began to take over the next couple of minutes with three points. His side kept biting at Na Piarsaigh’s lead who could depend on O’Donoghue, Mike Foley, and Ronan Lynch to keep them at bay. Darragh O’Donovan really came into affairs from here on, and levelled the match eventually on 50 minutes with a sumptuous sideline cut.

His goal followed by a further Doon point had it seemed that the John Daly Cup was remaining in East Limerick yet Boylan’s leveller drove on Na Piarsaigh, who never looked back in extra-time.
