UL students keep J1 visa plans alive despite US visa challenges

As summer approaches, thousands of Irish students are preparing their J1 visa applications, a “rite of passage” offering students the chance to live and work in the United States. But with political tension in the US making headlines, some students in Limerick are weighing whether the trip is worth the uncertainty.

USA Summer Jobs representative Kier Bates insists demand remains strong. Their “systems are all go,” Bates said, with thousands of students still committing to the programme this year. She added the organisation has recently met with the US Embassy in Ireland and, according to Bates, both sides share the same intent to continue facilitating student travel.

Bates’ advice was to “not listen to outside noise, if you wish to go on a J1, don’t hesitate.”

Dollars, dollars, dollars!

For many students, the bigger obstacle may be financial rather than political. Before even stepping foot in the US, applicants face significant upfront costs. Between company sponsorship fees, SEVIS charges, embassy appointments, insurance and flights, expenses can exceed €2,000 all before earning a single dollar.

Accommodation adds further pressure. Deposits often match a month’s rent, and housing in major US cities comes at a cost. Many students spend months balancing college work with part-time work to build savings, hoping to pay off their American summer.

A look at UL

At University of Limerick, the J1 remains a popular ambition. Students regularly visit the Academic Registry on campus to complete one of the first steps in the J1 process, securing proof of student status.

Marc Poole of UL’s Academic Registry said there was an approximate 7.5% drop in applications between 2024 and 2025, though he cautioned against reading too much into the shift.

“We’ve experienced similar peaks and dips in the past,” Poole added “so this variation may not be particularly meaningful.”

The application process begins with selecting a sponsor company and verifying student status before job hunting can begin. Once employment is secured, job agreements and visa paperwork must be approved before an embassy appointment is scheduled. Students are also advised to carry all documentation when travelling, as it may be requested during US pre-clearance.

For now, despite rising costs and global uncertainty, the J1 continues to attract students eager to experience an American summer.
