Following a bruising weekend for the Irish provinces, Munster’s Tom Farrell and Leinster’s Jimmy O’Brien have been called up to the Ireland squad ahead of the Gallagher Cup and Quilter Nations Series.

Farrell was Munster’s player of the season last year and his fine form has carried into this year, helping Munster remain unbeaten so far this season.

Farrell’s exclusion last week raised some eyebrows, so his addition will please many especially after a mammoth performance for Munster against Leinster in Croke Park.

The Munster duo of Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson, who were due to travel with the squad to Chicago as cover, have both been ruled out after injuries sustained during their game against Leinster.

Connacht’s’ Mack Hansen has also been ruled out for the game in Chicago following an aggravation of a foot injury against the Bulls. Bundee Aki and Robbie Henshaw are still due to travel to Chicago, but their fitness will continue to be assessed.

Ireland play New Zealand at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, 1 November.
