Treaty United clung to the final League of Ireland First Division promotion play-off spot despite a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Longford Town at Market’s Field last night.

The weather, which postponed the original scheduled Friday night timeslot, showed considerable improvement but conditions still made for rather dreary action.

Fifth-placed Treaty lay claim to the final promotion playoff spot despite just two wins from their last eleven, as sixth-placed Wexford, who suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to UCD yesterday, remain behind on goal difference.

The result undoubtedly makes their final-round showdown with Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park on October 17th a must-win fixture.

Longford, however, have opened the door for late push, with just three points now separating them from the Limerick City side.

The away side were first on the scoresheet shortly after the twenty minute mark.

Stefan Ugbesia’s shot from the lefthand-side of the box forced a strong save from Corey Chambers, but former Inverness vet Aaron Doran was quickest to react to the rebound, slotting the ball into an empty net.

Treaty did anything but down their tools following the setback, with numerous chances on goal created before the half-time whistle.

The pick of the bunch occurred at the 32nd minute, when Richkov Boevi’s saved header met Eoin Martin on the rebound, but his effort was blocked  on the goal line.

It took until shortly after the restart for Treaty to finally bear the fruits of the labour.

Treaty top scorer Lee Devitt found himself being the facilitator this time, with his lofted header flying over the backline and into the feet of an alert Patrick Ferry, who made no hesitation to slot a low shot into the corner of the net.

But it only took ten minutes for De Town to reinstate their claim on the game.

A wayward Lee Lynch pass to Carl O’Sullivan was intercepted by Longford’s Osaze Irhue, who kickstarted a fantastic counter-attack capped off by cool Ugbesia finish.

Treaty tried their best to escape with a point in the final half hour, but Longford’s newly settled low-block proved impenetrable.

It was the Shannonsiders who looked more likely to concede, with Longford’s dangerous counterattack always and their own forward line unable to create anything substantial.

Tommy Barrett’s men will undoubtedly seek a big improvement when they welcome third-placed Bray Wanderers to Market’s Field this Friday at 7.45pm.
