Treaty United head into their final game of the First Division season away to Wexford in fifth, one point ahead of their opponents. Tonight’s winner will finish in that position, with a draw being enough for the away side to secure a spot in the play-offs.
Treaty have only one win from their last 14 games against Wexford, but manager Tommy Barrett is confident the Shannonsiders can secure a result tonight.
“We’ll go into the Wexford game confident. It’s important that we go down there with an attitude that we have nothing to lose and try to win the game, because if we sit back and try and draw them on you, that’s where you get in trouble. You don’t want that, you want to go and attack them, and that’s what we’re going to do. It keeps our season alive if we get a result. It’s so important to go down there and try get the win and if we can’t, to get a point and finish on a high”.
Qualifying for the play-offs gives Treaty the chance to gain a first first-ever promotion to the Premier Division. Barrett, who has managed the team since its inception in 2021, and also managed and played for Limerick FC, says “it would be huge but there’s a long way to go before that happens”.
Treaty would need to defeat second-placed Cobh Ramblers in a two-legged fixture, followed by a win against either Bray Wanderers or UCD, and finally, a win against the team that finishes second-bottom in the Premier Division.
“We’re just concentrating on tonight and that’s all you can do in football, focus on the next game in front of you and that’s what we’re going to do tonight. But it would be fantastic. It would be worth all the hard work and the grind. It would be great to put us on the map. League of Ireland football is growing, and it’s growing in the region as well, and football in general is growing in Ireland and we’re hoping we can continue that and become a force to be reckoned with in the future”.
Team News
“Robbie Lynch is struggling. He tore his quad last week, or he certainly had a strain in it. Mark Walsh, our captain is struggling as well. Those two will be touch and go. We have a few longer-term injuries in Brian Cunningham, Trpimir [Vrljicak] is injured as well. We have a few, but we have a healthy enough squad so we’re happy enough with the players that we have, and we’ll go down there as confident as possible”.
Wexford FC vs Treaty United kicks off at 7.45 tonight.
