Four Limerick senior footballers receive Tailteann nod

The Limerick senior footballers have been rewarded with four places in this year’s Tailteann Cup Team of the Year.

Jimmy Lee’s team were defeated by just two points against Kildare in July’s final and had many standout performers throughout their Tailteann Cup campaign. Four, however, stood out from the rest.

Goalkeeper Josh Ryan was pivotal to Lee’s side throughout the season. It was only the Oola man’s second year between the sticks after suffering a horrific leg break playing hurling with Doon in 2022.

The Mallow-based Garda saved a penalty and provided a man-of-the-match performance in the semi-final against Wicklow.

Newcastle West clubman Iain Corbett was awarded the number 6 jersey in the team. The 33-year-old announced his retirement from the inter-county scene in August, after lining out for Limerick for 14 seasons.

Over those 14 years, Corbett was a stalwart of the team, and his presence will be sorely missed into 2026 and beyond.

The final two Treaty representatives occupy the wing-forward slots on this team.

James Naughton of St Senan’s and Ballysteen’s Danny Neville were a constant attacking threat for Limerick this year, amassing an impressive 3-43 between them.

Naughton entered the history books earlier in the year by becoming the highest individual scorer in an inter-county game, when he notched an insane 4-12 in the National League against Waterford.

Elsewhere in the team, champions Kildare predictably dominate the field. Five of Brian Flanagan’s victorious Lilywhites receive recognition for their excellent season.

County finalists Athy and Naas receive two awards each, with James McGrath and Kevin Feely representing Athy, and Darragh Kirwan and Alex Beirne making it from the Naas team.

Clane’s Harry O’Neill strong campaign sees him make the team at corner back.

Wicklow duo Dean Healy and Malachy Stone make the team, while Fermanagh’s only representative Lee Cullen slots in at full-back.

Wexford hotshot Sean Nolan, scorer of 5-25 throughout the campaign, is picked in the full-forward line, while Westmeath pair Sam McCartan and Luke Loughlin finish out the team.

The Downs clubman Loughlin was the competition’s top scorer, contributing 2-41 for the Lake County.
