The 98th annual Academy Awards are due to take place in the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

With American comedian Conan O’Brien hosting for the second consecutive year.

The event more commonly known as the ‘Oscars’, will be available to watch from 11pm March 15 on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

While red carpet coverage will begin at 11pm, the award ceremony itself will kick off at 12am.

All eyes are on Kerry native Jessie Buckley, as the Killarney woman is the front runner for Best Actress.

Her stellar performance as Agnes Hathaway in Hamnet has already earned her a Golden Globe, Actor Award, IFTA and BAFTA.

Buckley would become the first ever Irish actress to receive the award, with her talent being previously acknowledged in 2022 when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the psychological drama film The Lost Daughter.

The Hamnet buzz continues as British-Irish novelist Maggie O’Farrell is nominated alongside director Chloé Zhao in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

The Coleraine born author originally published the historical fiction story in 2020, detailing the tragedy of the Shakespeare family as they cope with the loss of their young son.

Now a global success, the film has a total of eight nominations, including Best Director (Zhao) and Best Motion Picture.

Hollywood’s most glamorous night will garner huge Irish interest this year as heartfelt comedic short film Retirement Plan is nominated for Best Animated Short Film.

The seven minute long piece features the voice acting of Domhnall Gleeson as his character Ray fantasises about the wonders he will achieve in retirement, when he finally “has the time.”

Directed by John Kelly, the Dublin native also co-wrote Retirement Plan with American Tara Lawall.

In the realm of special effects, Tallaght’s Richard Baneham is the top contender in the Best Visual Effects category for his contributions to epic science fiction film Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The graduate of Ballyfermot College of Further Education has previously won two Oscars for his work on the franchise’s blockbusters Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water.

It does not stop there, as Dublin-based Element Pictures is the production house of quirky alien thriller Bugonia.

The dark comedy has earned four nominations, and is up for Best Picture, Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.

Element Pictures founders Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney will represent the company at the 2026 Academy Awards.

This year’s show promises to be like no other, and has already attracted major hype as Ryan Coogler’s modern horror Sinners made history with a record number of 16 nominations.

See the full list of nominees here, and tune into RTÉ One tonight at 11pm to witness the film industry’s biggest night of the year.
