Local band Misery Goblin to release third single this Friday, November 6.

FIRST-YEAR Journalism and Digital Communications student Danny Lysaght is set to release his third studio single with their heavy metal band, Misery Goblin.

The single, titled ‘Crossroads of Time,’ will release tomorrow, November 6, on all streaming platforms, with a music video release to accompany.

The single is produced by Anthony Monahan and produced by Richard Dowling.

Misery Goblin is made up of Danny Lysaght on vocals, Luke O’Donovan on guitar, Ollie McFall on bass, and Lucy Fitzgibbon on drums. The bands lineup has shifted since its creation in 2024, though the band truly settled into their sound in February 2026, which vocalist Lysaght considers to be the start of a new era.

Lysaght’s time studying journalism in UL has given them some valuable lessons that have transferred from academia to their creative work.

“The main thing that I’ve taken to heart is the important of conciseness in writing. The songs we’ve been writing recently have been snappier death metal attacks than our older, sprawling songs.

“We wrote a song at the end of 2025 entitled ‘Tentacles of Doom,’ which was 10 minutes long, and we were really not proud of it. It wasn’t going over well at our gigs, and we weren’t enjoying playing it,” they said.

“Our recently written, unreleased songs have been a lot shorter but are packed in tightly with high-quality riffs and lyrics.”

Following the release of their newest single, the band have a variety of recording plans in their calendars.

“After releasing ‘Crossroads…’ we are hoping to record an album of demo tracks. These will be recorded in our rehearsal sessions and will be a much more raw representation of the songs that are true to our live sound,” they said.

“We’re hoping to get into the studio as well, hopefully after the first semester, to record some of our earliest songs. We want to have those tracks recorded separately to our more recent ones as they represent an earlier, more experimental and unsure era of the band.”

The group also have some live performances in the pipeline. “I don’t want to say too much as it’s all still in talks, but we are hoping to be back out there soon, showing off the new material we’re so proud of.”

Danny Lysaght also creates solo music under the name QBL.

“I released an album this week called ‘Gelatinous Chemical Sludge’ and I’m quite proud of it. Being in the band fostered such a creative drive in me, and I’m glad to have an outlet where I can put out my clearest creative musical vision, which is far removed from the constraints of genre or normality,” they said.
