Minister for Communications Patrick O’Donovan has stated that he will ask Coimisiún na Meán to review the media coverage of fuel protests that have been taking place over the last week.
Speaking with Limerick Live 95, as well as Tipp FM and WLR FM, the Limerick Minister said that the review will include coverage from RTÉ News.
O’Donovan described the coverage as ‘lop-sided’, when talking with Limerick Today host Joe Nash.
“One of things the things that has to be looked at this as well, is, from the national broadcaster’s point of view, and from other broadcasters’ point of view, is the whole issue of balance.”
“There was a huge amount of airtime given to this last week,” he acknowledged, but questioned whether the coverage was “balanced or skewed”.
“I think that is something that Coimisiún na Meán will have to look at.”
O’Donovan expressed that he will reach out to the media regulator to examine if there was a ‘proportionate and representative view’ of the general public’s opinion across all sectors of the economy.
“When something like this happens, how do we make sure that the views of the people on the hard shoulder, the ambulance personnel, the fire personnel, An Garda Síochána, people who don’t agree, and who do agree, are articulated.”

It comes after fuel protestors blocking Foynes Port stood down on Sunday afternoon, following a six-day blockade at the west Limerick port.
In a post on X, Limerick Independent Ireland TD Richard O’Donoghue said that they would pull out of Foynes peacefully as they came in peacefully.
