A man in his 30s has been arrested following a significant drugs seizure on the M7 motorway near Limerick.

Gardaí from Nenagh Garda Station say they responded to a report of a van that had been stopped on the motorway in the Birdhill area on Thursday, March 12.

Following initial enquiries, Gardaí carried out a search of the vehicle, which resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of cash and suspected cannabis, both of which were concealed inside the van.

The suspected drugs had an estimated value of €280,000, while €20,000 in cash was also recovered. Gardaí confirmed that a small amount of cocaine was also found during the search.

All drugs seized will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis. Investigators are also working to determine the origin of the cash.

“A male in his 30s was arrested and conveyed to a Garda station in County Tipperary. He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984,” a Garda spokesperson said.

According to An Garda Síochána Tipperary’s social media, the drugs were discovered concealed in the vehicle. Images showed 32 yellow boxes labelled ‘chamomile tea’, which were used to hide packages of suspected cannabis.
