Gardaí have seized drugs worth close to €650,000 following a search operation in Annacotty, County Limerick. The raid took place on Wednesday, April 29, and was carried out by officers from the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit as part of the ongoing national initiative Operation Tara, which focuses on tackling drug trafficking and organized crime across the country.
During the search of a house in the area, Gardaí uncovered a significant quantity of suspected illegal drugs. Cannabis made up the largest portion of the seizure, with an estimated street value of around €470,000. Officers also discovered suspected cocaine worth approximately €140,000. In addition, a large number of prescription tablets were found, with an estimated value of more than €33,000. Altogether, the total value of the drug seizure is believed to be approximately €643,000.
As well as the drugs, Gardaí recovered a quantity of cash and separate items associated with drug dealing. These included weighing scales, packaging materials, and ceiling equipment, all of which are commonly used in the preparation and distribution of illegal drugs. The presence of these items suggest that the substances were intended for sale rather than for personal use.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene in connection with the discovery. He was taken to a Garda station in County Limerick, where he is currently being detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. This legislation allows Gardaí to hold suspects for extend the questioning in serious drug related cases.
Local resident John Coleman expressed shock at the incident, saying it was unusual for something of this scale to happen in a residential neighbourhood. “It’s hard to believe that drugs of that value could be right on our doorstep,” he said. “You think of this as a quiet area, so it’s a real surprise to everyone living around here.”
Gardaí have confirmed that all seized substances will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for detailed analysis. Investigations are ongoing, and further developments are expected as the enquiries continue.
