University of Limerick students were well represented at the 2026 Annual Student Media Awards, taking home 3 awards.

Limerick Voice’s Sports Editor Andrew Moynihan won ‘Sports Writer of the Year’, receiving recognition for a number of articles posted on Limerick Voice’s website and in the physical publication.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have been honoured with this award,” He shared afterwards “I was well aware of the high calibre of writers that were nominated, in particular, my Limerick Voice colleague Chris Benn.

“I’d like to thank the Journalism Department at UL, and my friends and family.

“Finally, a thanks to Mark Forde, Jimmy Lee, and UL’s Sigerson Cup winning team, who I was able to cover over the last year.”

Imogen Cotter, currently studying a Masters in Journalism in UL, was awarded ‘The Joe Drennan Award for Journalism Related to Road Safety’, sponsored by the RSA. The award is named in memory of Joe Drennan, former editor of Limerick Voice, who was killed in a hit and run crash in 2023. Joe’s sister, Sarah Drennan, presented the award, and spoke of her brother’s love of journalism.

Second year geography student James Organ received the award for ‘Journalism Related to the Environment’.

Journalism lecturer Dr. Kathryn Hayes shared her excitement over UL’s awards. “I’m hugely proud of all of our students. The 16 nominations are a testament to the quality of work they produced.

“I was delighted to see Andrew Moynihan securing the award for Sports Writer of the Year in a historic year for sport in the University of Limerick, with UL winning both the Sigerson Cup and the Fitzgibbon Cup.

“It was wonderful to see Masters student Imogen Cotter awarded for her radio documentary, and a huge congratulations to James Organ of the geography department.

“Overall, it’s great to see our student’s work recognised on a national level.”
